Ice Box Challenge NZ

Our Simple Social Experiment...

A-Frame Cabin Exterior
A-Frame Cabin Exterior

The Ice Box Challenge is the ultimate showdown between a standard NZ code build and a high-performance Passive House.

We place two identical looking "boxes" in the summer heat, each holding a giant block of ice.

It’s a simple, visual experiment that lets you see the difference for yourself—proving just how powerful better insulation, superior windows + glass, airtightness, and quality design really are.

"We’re all here to prove that building energy efficient buildings isn't complicated - it’s just a smarter way to build. Better comfort, better health, cheaper running costs and a better life. Simple."

Mitre 10 New Zealand

Mitre 10 is proud to support the Ice Box Challenge, which brings to life one of the biggest issues in New Zealand homes; overheating and poor energy performance.

This simple experiment shows how better building design can keep homes cooler, healthier, and more efficient, especially as our summers get hotter and energy costs rise.

Together with industry partners, we’re highlighting practical, accessible ways to lift building performance.

The Ice Box Challenge is a great way to spark conversations about smarter materials and design, and we’re excited to help bring this message to communities across Aotearoa.

Built around a belief that beauty doesn’t have to compromise performance, Weathershield Warmcore aluminium windows were created out of a desire to combine the desirability and durability of aluminium with unparalleled insulation.

The unique, full width thermal core is key to why Weathershield windows are up to 75% more thermally efficient than traditional New Zealand aluminium systems.

We believe that glass can enhance the beauty and comfort of any living space. Our diverse glass range can transform rooms into stunning features, adding elegance and sophistication.

"Think of 'Fabric First' like a really high-quality chilly bin.

If the insulation is quality and the lid seals tight, your drinks stay ice-cold all day without needing a fridge motor running. We design & build your house the same way - focusing on quality windows + glazing, the right levels of insulation, airtightness, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

All to keep the scorching sun out. It means the house stays naturally cool, so you don’t need to blast the air con just to stop from melting on the couch."
